I am currently working on a project that involves the arenavirus JunÌn virus (JUNV), the causative agent responsible for the Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever. My goal is to develop a mouse model for JUNV infection that can be used under BSL2 conditions to study arenavirus activation of the innate immune system. I have shown that infection of mouse macrophages with Candid 1 caused the induction of both TNF- and IFN-. I am also currently using mouse macrophages with mutations in various innate immune response genes to determine which innate immune pathway (TLR, RIG-I, etc.) is involved in this response. Once these experiments are accomplished in cultured cells, I will study infection of different mutant mice with Candid 1. This project will allow further understanding about the innate cellular responses to JUNV and how this virus causes pathogenesis in vivo.

Research Description:
Presently I am working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine under the guidance of Dr Hydar Ali. My current research involves understanding signaling mechanisms in a group of immune cells called Mast cell and their role in allergic asthma. The complement system forms an important part of innate immunity against bacterial pathogens. The anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a are generated as byproducts of complement activation, and interact with cell surface receptors (G protein coupled receptors, GPCRs) in mast cells to mediate a variety of inflammatory responses.

Our lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms through which mast cells gets activated by C3a following binding to their receptor. Currently we are using both in vitro and in vivo mouse model systems to identify the adapter proteins and explore the role of their interactions with C3a receptor in mast cell activation and its contribution to the development of allergic asthma.

My research project focusses on the regulation of the B cell response during influenza virus infection and vaccination. We study the mechanisms that control the differentiation and survival of virus-specific antibody-secreting cells (ASCs) following infection and vaccination that ultimately both lead to a state of long-lasting protection and immunological memory. Research Description:
I mainly focus on defining T cell function. This type of T cells is one of the least understood components of the immune system. Yet, it is clear that gamma delta T cells contribute uniquely to host immune competence. In some human infections such as HIV, or in early lesions of MS patients, the percentage of gamma delta T cells in the blood, or the brain can increase to be ~50% (as compared to the below 5% in healthy individuals) of the total T cells. To better understand the function of gammadelta T cells, it is important to know what kind of antigen gammadelta T cells can recognize. I want to determine new gammadelta T cells ligands, to understand how gammadelta T cells activation and subsequent effector functions in infection and autoimmune diseases.
