Dr. Ruella obtained his medical degree with high honors at the University of Torino in Italy in 2007, and he specialized in clinical hematology in 2012 with a thesis on the treatment of follicular lymphoma with anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies. He worked as attending physician at the Hematology and Cell Therapy department at Mauriziano Hospital in Torino, where he participated to numerous studies on immunotherapy for relapsing/refractory leukemia and lymphoma. Dr. Ruella conducted laboratory research at the Molecular Biotechnology Center (M.B.C) in Torino, studying telomere dynamics in hematological neoplasms and cytokine-mediated tissue regeneration. From 2009 to 2012, Dr. Ruella was instructor at the course of Stem cells and Immunotherapy of the Biotechnology School at the Univ. of Torino. In December 2012 Dr. Ruella started his post-doctoral fellowship at the Translational Research Program, led by Dr. Carl June, at the University of Pennsylvania with the goal of developing new combination of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells for the treatment of relapsing/refractory B cell neoplasms.

Presently I am working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine under the guidance of Dr Hydar Ali. My current research involves understanding signaling mechanisms in a group of immune cells called Mast cell and their role in allergic asthma. The complement system forms an important part of innate immunity against bacterial pathogens. The anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a are generated as byproducts of complement activation, and interact with cell surface receptors (G protein coupled receptors, GPCRs) in mast cells to mediate a variety of inflammatory responses.

Our lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms through which mast cells gets activated by C3a following binding to their receptor. Currently we are using both in vitro and in vivo mouse model systems to identify the adapter proteins and explore the role of their interactions with C3a receptor in mast cell activation and its contribution to the development of allergic asthma.
