RESEARCH SUMMARY
Dr. Evans' research focuses on the neuropsychopharmacology and the neurobiology of stress and depression. Current studies examine how stress and depression may affect key parameters of cellular immunity in normal subjects, psychiatric patients and patients with HIV infection. Stress and depression, especially when they occur jointly, are associated with decreased cellular immunity. In immunocompromised individuals, such as patients with HIV infection or cancer, stress and depression may have clinical implications for the course of the disease. Underlying mechanisms with a specific focus on innate immunity are being studied as well as neuroendocrine and neuropeptide mechanisms.
