RESEARCH SUMMARY
My laboratory studies the chemical senses of the alimentary tract of the mouth, stomach, and small intestine, and we are interested in how the brain detects and integrates information about the chemical composition of food. The primary focus of this work is to determine how nutrients and toxins stimulate sensory nerve fibers in the tongue, stomach, intestine and liver to induce behavioral responses of ingestion, satiation, vomiting, and avoidance. This research may lead to a better understanding of the controls for feeding behavior, obesity, nausea, and the anorexia associated with chronic disease.
