RESEARCH INTERESTS

Neural control of respiration, central integration of autonomic functions; brainstem neuroanatomy and neuropharmacology

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES

Quantitative receptor autoradiography; neurotoxins; in situ hybridization; immunocytochemistry; tract tracing

RESEARCH SUMMARY

The central theme of Dr. Manaker's laboratory was the neurobiology of respiration. One major project focused on delineating the neural pathways from the caudal raphe nuclei to upper airway cranial motoneurons, which may mediate reductions of upper airway tone during REM sleep and, therefore, play a role in the pathogenesis of apnea. A second project focused on the neurochemical integration of vagal afferents in the nucleus of the solitary tract.

KEY WORDS:
Respiration, control of breathing, sleep apnea, upper airway
