RESEARCH SUMMARY

Formal mathematical models of neural networks are a powerful (and relatively new) computational paradigm. Characteristic features of this paradigm are the evolution of complex computation from the collective interaction of relatively simple processing elements and the ability to learn tasks from examples. Of particular interest to us are the characterisation of computations that can be carried out by specific families of tasks, and the information theoretic characterisation of tasks that can be learned by fixed neural structures. Application areas include pattern recognition, optimisation, control and regression.
