Insomnia is a sleeping disorder in which one experiences difficulty falling asleep, intermittent sleep throughout the night, or early morning waking. Symptoms include:
- Incapability of falling asleep within 30 minutes
- Sleep disturbance
- Inability to concentrate during the day
Insomnia appears to have a higher prevalence among women and those who are aging. The prevalence of insomnia can be, in part, due to increasing health risks among both populations. However, there are recent studies indicating that insomnia is increasing among young college students. Symptoms become perilous when tasks such as driving become difficult for insomniacs due to sleep deprivation. In addition, their social lives are also affected by irritability from being physically tired.
