The bacteriology program at Penn is growing, with 4 new faculty having been hired over the past 5 years. Particular areas of interest include type III secretion systems, interactions between the pathogen and the host cell, and small animal models. Listeria monocytogenes is studied by a large number of investigators, including those who use recombinant listeria vectors for studies on mucosal immunity and vaccine development. Studies on translation, DNA methylation, and other basic processes are also the focus of research programs.
