Microbiology Courses
This list is divided into two sections:
Course Primarily for Medical Students
100. Microbiology and mechanisms of infection
6 weeks, last half of fall semester. Davies, Frankel, Friedman, McGowan, Starr
and staffs of Microbiology, Medicine, and Pediatrics.
Introduction to the nature of microbial organisms and a comprehensive survey
of infectious diseases of humans, with major emphasis on the biology of the infectious
process. Important infectious pathogenic agents (bacteria, viruses, protozoa,
helminths, and fungi) are studied in terms of their physiological functions and
the properties which permit them to be pathogens, the epidemiology and pathogenesis
of the infections, analysis of the dynamic interactions between invading organisms
and the defense mechanisms of the invaded hosts, the clinical pictures of the
disease states, principles of action of appropriate chemotherapeutic agents, and
prevention of infection. The laboratory exercises provide an introduction to basic
microbiology and modern diagnostic and clinical microbiology. Microbiological
conferences with small groups of students supplement the lectures, conferences
and laboratories.
Courses primarily for Graduate Students
Courses for graduate students are divided into three levels: 400 (advanced
undergraduate and introductory graduate courses), 500 (basic graduate courses),
and 600 (advanced graduate and seminar courses). Listings are limited to courses
of particular interest to students in microbiology, virology, and immunology,
and do not include many other courses available to graduate students.
