Training Program in Virology and Infectious Diseases

Training Sites:

  • University of Pennsylvania
  • The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
  • The Wistar Institute

This NIH-funded training program is intended primarily for M.D.'s who have completed one year of clinical training. The program offers training in pathogenesis of viral, bacterial and parasitic infections with an emphasis on host immune responses and the development of effective prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines. Training will consist of two years of bench research in the laboratory of one of the trainers participating in the program. Training is supplemented by coursework at the University of Pennsylvania and a number of seminar series, conferences and retreats organized by the three institutions involved in the program. This training grant also offers a clinical research track in which fellows take courses in biostatistics and epidemiology and carry out a clinical research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor. All fellows are required to submit a written proposal of their research projects, and each fellow's progress is monitored by a committee made up of four to five trainers and by the Executive Committee of the program. An annual training symposium is held as which time each of the fellows presents his/her project. Fellows also receive training in ethical and responsible conduct in research.
