Training Program in Virology and Infectious Diseases

Training Sites:

  • University of Pennsylvania
  • The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

This NIH-funded training program is intended primarily for M.D.'s and M.D/Ph.D.’s who have completed one year of clinical training. The program offers training in fields important to infectious diseases, including the pathogenesis of viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections; immune responses to and regulation of infectious disease pathogens; and the development of effective vaccines. Training will consist of two years of bench research in the laboratory of one of the trainers participating in the program. Training is supplemented by coursework at the University of Pennsylvania and seminar series, conferences, and retreats organized by the institutions involved in the program. Each fellow's progress is monitored by the Executive Committee of the program, whose goal is to aid the candidate’s progress towards obtaining independent support and establishing their own lab.  Fellows also receive training in ethical and responsible conduct in research.
