Student Body
- Nearly 150 students - one of the largest programs in the country
- Our students are in 10 different graduate groups: biomedical graduate studies groups plus bioengineering, health care systems and history and sociology of science
- 40% of our students are women, despite the fact that women are underrepresented in the national and institutional MD-PhD applicant pool (typically only 33%)
- 10% of our students are of racial/ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine and science
Faculty and Research
- 600 faculty are members of Biomedical Graduate Studies Groups
- Nearly half of Penn School of Medicine faculty who are members of BGS are physician scientists
- 3rd rated overall in amount of NIH research funding; 1st in NIH research training funding
- 892,000 square feet of research space, much of which is new or newly renovated
History / Alumni
- Founded in 1969 - one of the oldest programs in the country
