Preview of Supplemental Application
Our MD-PhD supplemental online application does not become available to applicants until we have received a completed AMCAS application. We provide information here so that applicants and potential applicants have a preview of what to expect on the supplemental application.
To complete the MD-PhD supplemental application you will need to provide:
-
Graduate Group Information
Indicate which graduate group most closely matches your interests. Note that our program is flexible and students often apply to transfer from one graduate group to another after matriculation as their research interests evolve. The choice on the application is a starting point but does not limit you in the future. -
Personal Essay
The two MD/PHD essays on the AMCAS application are required to be considered for the MD/PHD program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. You will not need to provide an additional essay on the supplemental if your AMCAS essays discuss your career plans, including how much of a role research will play in your career. If you do not fully address this in your AMCAS essays or wish to provide additional information, there is a space on our supplemental application which allows applicants to provide an additional statement of 700-1000 words.
-
Intended Area of Specialization
List key words or phrases to describe your current research interests. -
Research Summary
List all of your research experiences (dates; name of institution; topic; time commitment; mentor). (This section will need to be entered in the appropriate fields in the on-line supplemental, so it is not necessarily helpful to prepare the list as a word processing document). -
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are a significant aspect of your application, and we encourage you to solicit at least 3 letters which will specifically address your research ability and potential. Included in these should be letters from mentors who have guided you through your most significant research experiences. If a letter will not be provided from a mentor, we ask that you explain the reason. -
Recent and current year activities
If you are not a full time undergraduate student at the time of application, you will be asked to describe your activities since graduation and your plans for the current year.
There are some additional items of information which will also be requested on the supplemental.
Note that if you are applying in History and Sociology of Science, you must take the GRE in addition to the MCAT
