Epidemiology of
Spinal Cord Injury. More than 10,000 persons in the United States are
disabled by traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) each year. Because of medical
advances that keep these persons alive, approximately 230,000 persons are
currently living with traumatic SCI in the US. Many more cases of SCI are
caused by diseases such as tumors, infections, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
(Lou Gehrigs disease) and multiple sclerosis.
