Overview

Members of the Department of Neurology, often in collaboration with basic scientists and clinicians in other departments and institutions, are actively engaged in a wide range of topics in basic and translational research. Active basic research efforts explore the anatomy, physiology, development and genetics of the peripheral and central nervous system. These investigations range from explorations of the molecular basis of neural processing to imaging and behavioral investigations in humans.

There are also active translational research efforts involving a large number of clinical disorders. For example, members of the department are engaged in ongoing investigations of Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, brain tumors, peripheral neuropathies, myopathies, movement disorders such as Parkinson's Disease and the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of primary degenerative dementias.

Finally, members of the Department of Neurology are engaged in a wide range of clinical trials involving pharmacologic and other treatments for Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Dementia and disorders of nerve and muscle.
