Orthopaedic Research Laboratory: Computer Use Protocol

Individual Workstations
1. Users are responsible for the organization of data on their own workstations. Please take the time to organize your files and folder structure.

2. Users are responsible for backing up files and programs on their own workstations as needed.

3. Users may install required software on their own workstations, if careful. If you are unsure of what you are doing, consult with someone who has used the program, or consult Melanie Gnazzo for help. Do not install software or make changes to your system configuration if you are unsure of the consequences!

4. Users may place executable files in shared folders on the server so that other users can access them.

5. Each user has a home directory on the server. These directories are backed up daily. Please store only one copy of important files in your server directory.

6. Your home directory on the server can be used for saving working-copies of documents. If you choose to do so, backup the documents elsewhere (e.g., on your workstation's hard disk or on other media).

Common-Use Computers
1. On common-use computers (e.g., imaging station, common room PC's, mechanical testing machines) store ALL your files in a directory/folder labeled with your username. You can create as many subdirectories as you need under your username directory. Any files stored in locations other than within your username directory will be deleted periodically.

2. Do not install software on common use computers. Any unauthorized software found on a common computer will be deleted.

3. If you have a need for additional software on a common computer, contact Melanie Gnazzo with your request.

4. Limit your file storage on common-use computers to current projects and data. Move old data and files to the server, personal workstations, CDs, ZIP disks, etc. If space becomes limited on the common-use computers, files older than six months will be deleted.

5. Personnel who do not have their own workstations and always use common PC's for basic tasks (e.g., word processing, data analysis, etc.) should store their documents in their home directory of the server. This will allow access to these files from any common-use computer hooked up to the local network.

General
The Local-Support Providers (LSP) for the Department are Melanie Gnazzo (Research Unit) and Jonathan Garino (Orthopaedic Surgery Department). Contact Melanie with any problems. If additional help is required of University Computer Support, Melanie will contact the correct personnel.
