IMPORTING FROM MEDLINE TO ENDNOTE

Exporting from MEDLINE
1. Load MEDLINE from the PENN Library Database on the Netscape browser.
2. Perform your search on MEDLINE. If partial information is available, the most efficient way is through the author search, then the title. Add the year limiter if known.
3. Select the item(s) of interest.
4. To extract this information into your computer correctly, fill in the citation manager as follows:
          CITATIONS: select the appropriate box
          FIELDS: select Complete Reference
          CITATION FORMAT: select Reprint/Medlars
          SAVE FORMAT: ASCII Text (DOS/Windows)
5. Click the save button. A file name "cites" will be created in the default folder. Change the file name into something recognizable, such as ref1, ref2, ref3, etc. This will make it easier to organize the files. Also, save the file in a folder that is easily accessible, like your desktop. This will make it easier to trasfer files into EndNOTE.

Note: A combined search is possible. To do this, click on the combine button. Click the searches which you want to combine. Select "OR" field. A new search category will be created.

Importing into EndNOTE
1. Open EndNOTE. Open a file, otherwise create a new one.
2. Under the file button, click import. Select the file saved from MEDLINE. It will have a .txt extension.
3. Click on the import option and select other filters. A new windown will open, choose OVID_reprint_medlars. A new window will open again, choose MEDLINE OVID.
4. Click on import all. Done.
