Orthopaedic Research Laboratory: Machine Shop and Tool Use Protocol

General
1. Prior to working in the machine shop, review all equipment with Paul Robinson to receive the necessary instruction on safety and usage. You cannot use any equipment until you have been checked out by Paul Robinson and put on the authorized user list.

2. Clean up after yourself (this includes floors, counter tops and equipment) and put equipment back where it belongs. Also clean and/or oil tools (e.g., drill bits, end mills) after using them. All material shavings and scrap should be cleaned off the machines and floor and placed in the large white plastic bin. Do not place shavings and scraps in the garbage can.

3. No animal carcasses or cadaver parts should be in the machine shop at any time. Similarly, no machine shop tools should be used on biological tissues elsewhere in the lab. If additional tools are needed for working with biological tissues, contact Paul Robinson.

4. Please report any broken, missing or malfunctioning pieces of equipment to Paul Robinson ASAP.

5. Please learn and perform basic care and maintenance of the equipment.

Safety
1. Safety goggles must be worn at all times when working in the machine shop.

2. Loose clothing, long hair, ties, and loose jewelry must be removed or restrained when operating equipment.

3. Remove gloves to operate machinery / power tools.

4. There must be at least one other person in the lab when operating machinery, regardless of the time of day.

Use of tools (e.g., drill, vise, etc.) outside of the machine shop
1. All of the above general and safety guidelines apply.

2. If you are unsure about bringing machine shop equipment to other laboratory locations, check with Paul Robinson first.
