Recipe for Verhoeff's Stain

Ingredients:
A. 5% hematoxylin solution (0.4 g hematoxylin, 20 mL EtOH 95%)
B. 10% acqeous ferric chloride (2.0 g ferric chloride, 20 mL deionized water)
C. Weigerts' iodine solution (2.0 potassium iodide, 1.0 iodine, 100 mL deionized water)

Dissolve all solids. Add in order: 8 mL of B to 20 mL of A. Then add 8 mL of C to the A and B mixture.

Notes: Solution A, B and C may be made ahead of time and stored separately. Their shelf lives are A 100 years, B 1 week, and C 3 months. After mixing, stain may be stored at room temperature for 1 week.
