USING THE TREX MEDICAL X-RAY SYSTEM

The x-ray system is available only for orthopaedic research use. All users must sign up prior to using the system. The sign-up sheet is located on the x-ray room door (room 412 B) and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you have not used this system before, please consult with Jose Luis Charvet (3-3660, room 412 A) first for training. He will guide you on your first run. Once checked out by Jose, you may be allowed to use the processor alone but are required to adhere to the guidelines below.

IN CASE OF RADIATION EMERGENCY, CALL THE RADIATION SAFETY OFFICE AT (215) 898-7187.

Room preparation:
1. Turn on the main power breakers (two switches) located inside the gray box hanging on the wall.
2. Turn on the x-ray system through the controller. The switch is located on the lower back corner.
3. Before closing the door, place the "x-ray in use" sign.
4. Move the mobile barrier so that you are protected from radiation while working on controller.

X-ray Tube Warm-up:
1. Select the following modes: manual, 3-factor, top exposure, and large focal spot.
2. Select the 50 mA station.
3. Select 150 ms time.
4. Select 65 kVp.
5. Make 5 exposures at 30 seconds apart.

Taking x-ray exposures:
1. Turn on the safelight, then switch off the light.
2. Load the film appropriately on the cassette.
3. Turn on the light, then switch off the safelight.
4. Adjust the height and orientation of the x-ray head to the desired configuration.
5. Place the cassette opposite the x-ray head. Use the lamp to adjust the proper focal size.
6. Select the appropriate mA, ms, mAs and kVp settings.
7. To make the exposure, hold down the "prep" botton. When the radiation lamp lights up on the controller press "x-ray". The x-ray system will buzz and the x-ray film is exposed.

Shutting down the x-ray system:
1. Return the mobile barrier to the wall next to the controller.
2. Remove the "x-ray in use" sign on the door.
3. IMPORTANT: DISPLACE THE X-RAY HEAD TO IT'S DEFAULT POSITION BEFORE TURNING OFF THE SYSTEM!!!
4. Turn off the x-ray system through the controller.
5. Turn off the main power breakers (two switches) located inside the gray box hanging on the wall. Clean-up: 1. Please take all items that came with you when you leave.


*Note: If these instructions are not followed or the equipment and facility are not left in ideal conditions, use will be discontinued.
