AREAS OF SPECIAL INTERESTS
Intervertebral Disc Biomechanics, Degeneration and Continuum Modeling; Tendon Biomechanics
Heather is a doctoral candidate in the McKay Orthopaedic Research Lab. Since 2000 she has been working with Dr. Dawn Elliott. Until recently, her primary research focus has been on the mechanical behavior of tendons and ligaments. Heather is now pursuing research interests in intervertebral disc mechanical behavior and mathematical modeling.
Heather has been awarded an Ashton Fellowship from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, which covers tuition for four years, and a University Fellowship which covered her stipend for the first year of graduate study. Heather received first prize for Graduate Student Podium Presentation for her presentation of "Determination of Modulus and Poisson's Ratio in Two Dimensions for Evaluation of Tendon Equilibrium Behavior" at the IEEE Northeast Bioengineering Conference in April, 2002. Additionally, she was chosen as the Outstanding Teaching Assistant by the University of Pennsylvania Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics for the Spring semester of 2003.
