Congratulations to Yale E. Goldman as the Principal Investigator of a new NSF Science and Technology Center!

September 2016

Yale E. Goldman, MD, PhD

Congratulations to Yale E. Goldman as the Principal Investigator of a new NSF Science and Technology Center!

The National Science Foundation awarded $94 million to create four new Science and Technology Centers at the forefront of innovation. Yale and his colleagues’ program, The Science and Technology Center for Engineering MechanoBiology, will receive up to $24 million over a five-year period, with a possibility of a continuation for five additional years.

Mechanobiology is a field that focuses on how forces influence biological systems. This center's mission is to discover the principles that govern how plant and animal systems communicate using molecular and cellular methods. The center will provide the intellectual foundations and materials for engineering new and powerful cell-based devices, and for training students in the foundations of mechanobiology.

The center will bring together leading researchers from a diverse group of disciplines and institutions at the intersection of biology, mechanics and engineering. The center involves 30 investigators from 7 universities. At Penn there are 16 from PSoM, SEAS and SAS, including E. Michael Ostap, Erika L.F. Holzbaur and Benjamin Prosser from Physiology.
