Setting up Apple Mail Using Kerberos

This guide will show you how to set up Apple Mail to access your Zimbra account if you are using Enhanced Security.

Download and Install the Kerberos Ticket Manager

Download and install the Kerberos Ticket Manager

You may download the latest version of the MIT Kerberos Ticket Manager from Penn's Supported Computing Products web site, under the "Security Applications" sub-section. When you have finished downloading the installer, unzip the installed, and double-click on it to install the software.

Launch Apple Mail and Enter your Identity into the 'Welcome to Mail' Setup

When you open Apple Mail the Welcome to Mail setup wizard automatically appears if there are no other existing accounts or this is the first time you have opened Mail.

Enter your name as you would like it to appear when you send email to others. Enter your preferred contact email address. This is the address people will reply to and add to their address books when they receive email from you. Enter your PennKey password into the Password field. When you're done, select 'Continue'.

We recommend that you select IMAP for your Account Type. Enter a description for your account such as 'UPenn email' into the Description field. Set your incoming server to zimbra.upenn.edu. Enter your PennKey name and password into the User Name and Password fields respectively. Click 'Continue'.

Enter your PennKey password into the Password field of the Kerberos Authentication window appears that after you enter your Incoming Mail Server settings. When done, select 'Continue'.

Enter a description for your outgoing server such as 'Zimbra' into the Description field. Set your outgoing server to zimbra.upenn.edu. Check the boxes labeled 'Use only this server' and 'Use Authentication.' Enter your PennKey name and password into the User Name and Password fields respectively. Click 'Continue'.

Verify all the information on the Account Summary window, check the box labeled 'Take account online', and select 'Create'.
