Basic Science Research - Mission & History
History
The Center for Neurobiology and Behavior (CNB) was established by the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry in 1996 to consolidate and give specific identity to basic research in neurobiology and behavior.
Mission
The mission of the Center continues to be to strengthen behavioral neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the pre-eminence of basic research programs in the Department of Psychiatry. The Center complements and extends the research program of the Department of Neuroscience by supporting an integrated systems approach to the neurobiology of mammalian and human behavior.
Overview
The Department’s scientific strength within the basic neurosciences and genetics has developed considerably with the creation and expansion of the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior. The Department has strong programs in both mammalian and human genetics that relate to bipolar and unipolar disorders, schizophrenia, epilepsy, substance abuse, obesity, and disorders relating to circadian rhythm. There are also major neurobiological research programs examining the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, addictions, and depression. Major programs have also been directed towards cognitive neuroscience and behavioral and molecular neuropharmacology.
