Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training
The University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Psychiatry offers an excellent introduction to child and adolescent psychiatry in the general residency program through its affiliation with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. PGY-1 residents are offered the opportunity to do one month of general in-patient pediatric medicine, one month of adolescent in-patient medicine, one month of pediatric emergency medicine, and one month of pediatric neurology. In the PGY-2 year, residents rotate through the consultation-liaison service at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and at the out-patient setting at either Hall-Mercer Community Mental Health Center. During the PGY-3 year, residents have one afternoon clinic per week at either Hall-Mercer Community Mental Health Center or at the outpatient practice of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Residents are encouraged to have long-term pediatric psychotherapy cases and are provided with supervision from faculty members from both Penn and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. During the PGY-4 year, residents can continue seeing their child and adolescent therapy cases and also begin to see family therapy cases.
- Child and Adolescent didactics include didactics on child development, pediatric psychopharmacology, family systems, the approach to the adolescent, and psychodynamic psychoanalytic theory.
- Observed patient and family interviews occur in the assessment clinic behind the mirror at the outpatient practice at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
- CHOP child and adolescent fellows are active in teaching residents.
- Penn residents can chose to either fast-track into a child and adolescent program after the PGY-3 year or complete the four year general residency and apply to fellowship.
- Research opportunities at both PENN and CHOP are available to general psychiatry residents interested in child and adolescent psychiatry research.
