Welcome to the Residency Training Program

Welcome to the Penn Psychiatry Residency Program!! We’re very pleased that you’re considering applying to Penn, and we hope you will peruse our website, talk to our residents, faculty and us about what our residency has to offer. Penn Psychiatry is a warm, collegial, cohesive, family-friendly program in a diverse powerhouse academic department of psychiatry. There is breadth and depth in our clinical and research endeavors, as well as a firm commitment to outstanding teaching at all levels.
The University of Pennsylvania (first university in the colonies!) was founded in 1749 by Benjamin Franklin whose democratic, altruistic and pragmatic values are reflected in virtually everything we do. Our residency is dedicated to outstanding clinical training through broad-based clinical exposure and close mentoring and supervision. Our internationally recognized research faculty invite residents to work with them and launch academic research careers. In addition to becoming outstanding physicians, residents develop as teachers and supervisors to other trainees, and become experts at understanding mental health systems as well as advocating for change.
Energy, empathy, intellectual curiosity and a drive to help those suffering from mental illness are the hallmarks of a Penn resident, and we are proud of the psychiatrists our residents eventually become. We are committed to creating a diverse class of residents and are extremely proud of their breadth of background, interests and ambitions.
We look forward to meeting you in person should you come to interview at Penn and wish you the best of luck in starting your career in the most exciting field in medicine!
With warmest regards,
