MPH students in the Generalist track:

  1. Articulate a rationale for a generalist orientation to public health education. Where applicable students should describe this in the context of their prior experience and training, and their future career plans.
  2. Articulate 2-5 additional competencies (interdisciplinary or cross-cutting) in public health beyond the core that are suitable in the context of their career goals in public health.
  3. Specify a curricular plan of 4-5 electives beyond the core courses and fieldwork requirements that result in attainment of additional competencies.
  4. Students will be evaluated on the attainment and demonstration of additional public health competencies through the culminating (Capstone PUBH 508) experience.

Below are some examples of competencies a generalist student might identify:

The generalist DMD-MPH dual degree provides students with a focus on population health, and a specific concentration in community oral health and dental public health. A DMD-MPH student may identify competencies related to public health dentistry such as:

  • Advocate for, implement and evaluate public health policy, legislation, and regulations to protect and promote the public's oral health (COH 612 Local and Global Public Health 1.0 cu)
  • Design and conduct population-based studies to answer oral and public health questions (COH 712 Community Oral Health 1.0 cu)
  • Evaluate and monitor dental care delivery systems (Selectives in Dental Health 1.0 cu)

The generalist MSW-MPH dual degree is designed to provide a broad population-based perspective to address the health and wellbeing of communities. An MSW-MPH student may identify competencies related to public health social work such as:

  • Identify the relationships between poor housing, poor working conditions and poverty and high rates of infant mortality, TB and behavior, and other health issues. (SWRK 702 Social Work Practice in Healthcare)
  • Apply skills such as planning, capacity building, and community organization to empower and mobilize communities be take action to identify and address public health concerns. (SWRK 613)
  • Synthesize contemporary and alternative health and social policies. (611 Contemporary Social Policy)

The generalist MSN-MPH dual degree Health Leadership

By working with whole communities, public health nurses are able to educate people about health issues, improve community health and safety, and increase access to care. An MSN-MPH student may identify competencies related to leadership in public health nursing such as:

  • Advocate for health policy to benefit unserved and underserved populations and to address community needs. (Nurs 748 Leadership Development for Health)
  • Promote appropriate linkages among the components of the case management and referral systems (Nurs 650 Health Systems Analysis)
  • Interpret the public health impact of health policy with community partners, policy-makers, and other health stakeholders (Nurs 749 History, Health, and Social Policy)

The generalist MPH student with a particular interest in Health Policy may identify the following competencies:

  • Demonstrate a systematic approach to analyzing the feasibility and possible unintended consequences of implementing and managing policy innovations in healthcare. (HCMG 850 Health Policy)
  • Apply economic concepts and theories to the analysis of healthcare policy and issues and to inform decision-making and policy development (HCMG 841 Healthcare Services)
  • Analyze and critique literature on health policy, health management, and health services research (PUBH 537 Evidence-based Health Policy)

The generalist MPH student interested in Program Planning and Administration may identify the following competencies:

  • Demonstrate competencies in using planning methodologies and techniques for community-based health planning and organizational strategic planning. (PUBH 525 Program Development)
  • Design program evaluations to measure outcomes, effectiveness, and quality (PUBH 521 Program Evaluation)
  • Apply ethical decision making in a health care context (OPIM 690 Managing Decision Making)

The generalist MPH student interested in Health Communication may identify the following competencies:

  • Use empirical evidence, formative research, and theory to develop strategies and messages to promote healthful change in specific "target" audiences. (COMM 577 Attitudes and Behavior Predictors)
  • Craft theory-based messages to achieve health communication objectives including but not limited to: raising awareness, advocacy, behavior change, risk communication. (PUBH 527 Media, Advocacy and Public Health)
  • Incorporate audience needs and characteristics into strategic communication plans and message design; these needs and characteristics may include literacy levels, language, culture, channel access and/or cognitive and perceptual abilities. (COMM 637 Public Health Communication)
