Glucosamine/Chrondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT)

Description of the Study:

The purpose of this voluntary research study is to test the safety and effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in treating knee pain from Osteoarthritis of the knee.

You will receive, free of charge, an examination by Dr. H. Ralph Schumacher, Jr., MD, have labs performed (blood and urine), x-rays of the knees, study medications and Tylenol.

You will receive only one of the following medications for your entire six (6) month participation in this study:

  • Glucosamine
  • Chondroitin Sulfate
  • Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate together
  • Celecoxib
  • Placebo (a pill with no medication)
Participation is six (6) months and usually only six (6) visits. The first two (2) visits are about two (2) hours long but the last four (4) visits are about one (1) hour each.
Inclusion:
  • Have Osteoarthritis of the Knee
  • 40 years of age or older
Exclusion:
  • Currently taking glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate
  • Allergic to shellfish, sulfonamides, Tylenol, Celecoxib, glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate
  • Taking blood thinners (one aspirin a day is allowed)
