2009-2011 Clinical Scholars

Incoming Scholars: The fifth cohort of Scholars entered the Penn Clinical Scholars Program in July 2009.

• Neera Goyal , MD, (Pediatrics) received her undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Emory University and her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Goyal completed her training in pediatrics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where she also spent one year after residency as a hospitalist in the neonatal intensive care unit. Her current research and clinical interests are in pediatric hospital care, focusing specifically on physician decision-making, disparities in hospitalization rates, and patterns of resource use for former premature infants. 

• Sophia Jan, MD, (Internal Medicine - Pediatrics) obtained her undergraduate degree from CUNY Brooklyn College and medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center.  She then completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she served as chief resident.  She is broadly interested in disparities in healthcare access and how children with special healthcare needs transition to adult care.

• Jeff Kullgren, MD, MPH, (VA Scholar, Internal Medicine) received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Michigan State University, and his public health degree from the University of Michigan.  He completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  His current research interests include improving access to care for low-income populations and the use of public policy tools such as health incentives, insurance benefit design, and regulations to encourage healthy behaviors. 

• Janice Scobie MD, MS, (VA Scholar, Cardiology) received her undergraduate degree in Biology & Society from Cornell University. She completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and then completed her internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She then went on to complete a cardiology fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Her clinical and research interests include cardiovascular disease prevention, disparities in cardiovascular disease and care, factors that impact patient adherence after a cardiovascular event and utilization of cardiovascular technologies, access to health care, and health policy to improve health care access and reduce disparities.

• Amy Tsou, MD, MA, (Neurology) received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia before pursuing studies in religion at Westminster Theological Seminary.  She trained at the University of Pennsylvania for medical school and completed residency in the department of neurology.  Her research interests include end of life care, cultural factors impacting decision-making and the role of media in healthcare.

• Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds MD, MPH, (Obstetrics/Gynecology) is originally from Atlanta, GA.  She received her undergraduate degree in Community Health and African American Studies at Brown University.  She went on to receive her medical degree from Brown as well, and, concurrently, completed a Masters in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.  Brownsyne trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center where she served as an Administrative Chief Resident in her final year.  Her research interests include substance abuse among pregnant and parenting women, medical ethics, humanism in medicine, and cultural competency in medical education.

• Niamey Wilson, MD, (Surgery) received her medical degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. During medical school she helped to found a free, student-run medical clinic in Washington Heights that served primarily Dominican uninsured patients. Dr. Wilson is currently completing her General Surgery training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests are focused on health care disparities in surgical access, care and outcomes in the uninsured patient population, and the subsequent policy implications. Her goal is to create research which will ultimately help promote and create universal health care.
