Guests:  Dr. Stephanie Abbuhl & Patricia Scott (FOCUS)

Dr. Emma Furth introduced Dr. Stephanie Abbuhl and Patricia Scott from FOCUS. Dr. Abbuhl began the presentation by reviewing the purpose and mission of FOCUS.  FOCUS has been in existence since 1994 and has a dual mission of supporting the advancement and leadership of women faculty and promoting education and research in women’s health at Penn Medicine.

FOCUS has recently been awarded a grant from the NIH for $1.3 million dollars. Dr. Abbuhl and Dr. Jeane Ann Grisso (Professor, Medicine and Nursing) are the principal investigators of the grant.  The research, using cluster-randomized intervention trials will be a multi-pronged intervention and will focus on enhancing institutional culture, increasing academic productivity and improving job satisfaction for women faculty.

Dr. Abbuhl also discussed other FOCUS initiatives.  They recently developed a seminar series for Penn women fellows and residents.  In partnership with select faculty from the Department of Medicine and Dr. Stewart Friedman from the Wharton School, the Total Leadership Initiative was created.  The goal of this program is to integrate work, home and community so that faculty can become more productive leaders and fulfilled person.

Other ongoing initiatives of FOCUS include the annual reporting benchmark data, the Annual Fall Leadership Mentoring Conference, mentored CV reviews, the Faculty Recognition Award which is the FOCUS Award for the Advancement of Women in Medicine, the FOCUS writing group, the Women’s Health Scholar Certificate program, and the annual Spring Conference for Senior Women in Academic Medicine.

Dr. Furth reviewed the Steering Committee initiative of conducting focus groups.  The topics to be covered in these group meetings are the career development plan, the teaching initiative, and the role of the MFSSC.  Members of the Steering Committee will participate with Dr. Furth in conducting these meetings.

Dr. Furth followed-up on the discussion from the last meeting about the career development plan.  She clarified that the plan is an opportunity for an annual meeting between the department chair or chief and the faculty member to review accomplishments, plans for the upcoming year, career goals, and resources needed. The discussion may or may not include salary.  The annual career development meeting has been supported by the department chairs.  She further clarified that the form that was developed was meant to be a tool to assist in guiding the conversation and that the form is not required.  Dr. Furth also mentioned that the Provost had mandated an annual performance review for all faculty.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph Straton, M.D.
