Medical Faculty Senate Steering Committee

Meeting Minutes

September 14, 2010

Attendees:  Jill Baren, M.D., M.B.E., Lisa Bellini, M.D., Maja Bucan, Ph.D., Emily Fox Conant, M.D.,  Emma Furth, M.D., Donna George, Ph.D., Peter Kanetsky, Ph.D., Michael Levine, M.D., Maureen McCunn, M.D., Victoria Mulhern, Mary Putt, Ph.D., Anne Reilly, M.D., Deborah Sesok-Pizzini, M.D., Daniel Weintraub, M.D.

Dr. Reilly opened the first meeting of the Medical Faculty Senate Steering Committee for 2010-2011.  She welcomed the members and reviewed the responsibilities and past accomplishments of the Medical Faculty Senate.  The senate is made up of the standing faculty,  academic clinicians and research track faculty.  She stressed that the Medical Faculty Senate has the ability to influence and be the voice of the faculty.  One past accomplishment was Faculty 2000.  Recommendations from Faculty 2000 included the creation of the Academic Clinician Track, the extension of the probationary period for the research track, the creation of the Association of Senior and Emeritus Faculty and the development of the faculty professional development program.  The other accomplishments she mentioned were the compressed sabbatical, the teaching initiative, the career development plan and presentations at department faculty meetings. Dr. Reilly informed the steering committee that there is a Medical Faculty Senate website that contains bylaws, minutes from the steering committee meetings and announcements for the faculty in the School of Medicine.

A function of the steering committee meetings is to discuss and be informed on what is going on within the School of Medicine.  This is done through open discussions within the steering committee, as well as through guest speakers that present at  monthly meetings.  Dr. Reilly reviewed the scheduled speakers for this year and Dr. Bellini suggested that the new Vice Provost, Dr. Lynn Hollen Lees, should be invited as a guest speaker at one of the future meetings.

Dr. Reilly noted that  President Gutmann approached the Medical Faculty Senate last spring to request recommendations of faculty to participate on the consultative committee to the President for the search for the new dean of the medical school.

Dr. Reilly expressed that her plan for this year is to work on a 2 year project in partnership with Dr.  Baren, chair-elect.  She recommended surveying the faculty for pressing issues and then working on what may be reasonably implemented.  Issues that were mentioned included the Academic Clinician track and the standards for promotion on that track, how time is counted within the departments in the School of Medicine, how faculty can access information and resources that are available and have the time to access these resources, information about the Medical Faculty Senate and information about promotion.

Regarding the Academic Clinician track, Dr. Bellini mentioned that plans are underway for a focus group of Academic Clinicians to participate in discussions about the track including standards for promotion. Dr. Bellini also reported that there has been very preliminary discussion concerning the creation of a part-time Academic Clinician position.  This position would be long term and would not be subject to the current reduction in duties policy which is limited to six years.   This preliminary proposal would require extensive discussion and approval within the School of Medicine and the University.  Dr. George suggested that the idea of the part-time AC track position be included in the survey.

Dr. Reilly closed the meeting by informing everyone that she would draft the survey for the faculty and would forward it to the members of the steering committee for review and comment.  She also suggested  working on a  welcome letter for the new Dean, Dr. J. Larry Jameson to be sent later in the year.

The next meeting is scheduled for October 12, 2010.

Respectfully submitted,

Emily Fox-Conant, M.D.
