During locomotion, the head rotates at frequencies up to 20 Hz, but normally our vision remains clear. This is because the VOR stabilizes gaze in space, even though the eyes are moving with the head. Using a simple circuit to flash an LED display and a plastic rod clenched in the teeth, we can measure the gain of the VOR. This will lead to the development of an inexpensive bedside test that will help monitor patients at risk for developing loss of inner ear balance function because of medications they are taking.
