Mail.Med Features
Security
- Virus scanning on all incoming and outgoing messages
- MessageLabs, an outside contractor, currently scans all incoming and outgoing mail for viruses, worms, and other potentially destructive executables with minimal delay in message delivery
- Messages intercepted by MessageLabs are quarantined for a period of time before they are deleted. ISC will allow intercepted messages to pass through if the recipient specifically requests delivery
- Encryption between mail.med and UPHS
- A properly configured mail client sending or receiving messages within mail.med or between mail.med and uphs.upenn.edu will meet Penn Medicine standards for e-mail security
- Kerberos authentication available for the incoming and outgoing mail servers
- TSL/SSL encryption available for the incoming and outgoing servers
- TLS/SSL encryption will be required starting on September 12, 2006
Infrastructure
- Fully redundant service
- All data is mirrored off-site on a server that will become operational if the main mail.med server were to experience problems for any reason
- ISC Networking mail servers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When a service outage occurs, ISC staff attempt to restore service as quickly as possible.
- Designed for reliability and performance
- Data is stored on specialized high-availability, high-performance media, for example
- Frequent back-ups

- ISC and School of Medicine Information Services staff are available to monitor, diagnose, and correct any system failures that might occur during normal business hours (Monday through Friday from 8:00am through 5:00pm)
Features
- IMAP, POP, webmail, and the host-based client support
- Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, and Microsoft Outlook 2003 are the University's supported e-mail clients
- Mutt and Pine are the host-based clients that are currently available.
- Webmail is currently IMP version 3
- Spam filtering
- SpamAssassin (filtering based on rules)
- URI Realtime Blacklists (filtering based on spam-related URLs)
- Razor (filtering based on user-reported examples of spam)
- User customizable Allow/Disallow lists
- Account Sharing
- users can give others PennKey access to their account
- Quota
- 100 MB base quota
- extra storage space is $6.25 per month for each 100 MB over the base quota limit
- 30 day temporary quota increases available by request
- Quota-fee accounts are available, users pay for their actual usage at the standard rate
- Server will send and accept messages up to 20MB
Customer Support
- Local Support Providers generally provide e-mail client support. SOMIS, in conjunction with ISC, provides second-tier support to Local Support Providers
- Account administration (creation, modification, deletion, etc) is handled by SOMIS administrators during normal business hours, 9 AM - 5 PM Monday through Friday.
University Synthesis
- Addresses are automatically uploaded into the Penn Directory
- Faculty, staff, and students will have entries in the Penn Directory which allows everyone to receive University announcements
- PennKey authentication available
- Gives users the opportunity to have one secure username and password that work for a variety of applications
- PennName compliant accounts
- Users only have one username to remember that works with multiple systems across the University
