Software
University Supported Software
The computing software recommended by the University's Information
Systems & Computing (ISC) for general-purpose campuswide use is
listed on
ISC's
Supported Products page . Site-licensed and freeware packages
are also available for download. Many departments and centers have
standardized on the use of specific software. Faculty and staff should
speak to their local support provider to determine what products are
supported before selecting software.
ISC CD-ROM Distribution
The Computing Resource Center (CRC) at 202 Sansom Place West distributes
all the supported networking software for Macintosh and Windows on
CD-ROM. Hours are 1 PM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. You will
need to show your PENNcard to obtain the CD.
Obtaining Academic Discounts on Commercial Software
The University maintains a computing store,
The
Computer Connection, for obtaining academic discounts on common
commercially available software packages.
*The School of Medicine does not support Windows ME or Windows XP
Home. Contact your LSP regarding specific guidance on supported software
packages.
Obtaining University Site-licensed Software
The
Office of Software Licensing negotiates and administers software
site licenses and volume discounts programs at Penn, and distributes
licenses and media for those programs. Departments, faculty, and staff
(and in some cases, students) can purchase this software at significant
savings.
While terms vary from vendor to vendor, most licenses must be used
for University-related educational or research purposes and on University-owned
computers-and a license is needed for each computer running the software.
Other specific regulations appear in the product descriptions on the
OSL site.
Most licenses purchased through the OSL program require departments
to be responsible for the annual renewal fee to maintain the University's
volume discount structure and eligibility for software updates and
support.
Microsoft Select Volume Licensing Program
University of Pennsylvania departments can acquire licenses through
the
Microsoft
Select Volume Licensing Program. This program offers new features
and benefits that are detailed
here.
Calendar Software
The School of Medicine has chosen CorporateTime as it's preferred
calendar software package. Licenses are available through SOMIS. For
more information, please call 898-9755.
University Sponsored Software Training
The University's
Technology
Training Services has established a relationship with Online Consulting
to provide classes conveniently located on Penn's Campus at a discount
to members of the Penn Community. In many cases, classes taken at
Penn are about 25% less expensive than comparable classes off campus.
All sessions are held in state-of-the-art facilities with professional
trainers. Regularly scheduled classes include:
End-user trainings on products like Microsoft® Windows, Excel,
Access, Powerpoint and Word, basic and advanced Internet Fundamentals,
HTML, Dreamweaver*, Javascript, ColdFusion and Photoshop. Custom training
programs may be available for groups.
Please Note: The software packages used in TTL training are not necessarily supported by SOMIS or your LSP. Please check with your
LSP before signing up for any training or purchasing software to make sure
that the package you are considering is supported locally.
* The SOMIS Web Team has specific recommendations for web page editing and programming. Please consult the
SOM Webstandards site for details.
