The Penn Medicine Academic Computing Services(PMACS) team welcomes you to Penn.
The Med student home page is a good beginning, and a very valuable resource. You can browse this site to find out what is available and how to get to the services you will need. This page is maintained by Academic Programs.
In general, much of your first 18 month curriculum is available online, ranging from the notable Curriculum 2000©, to images and links to other important services across the university. Academic Programs resources maintain the curriculum and access to academic computing.
Computing Security and Your Responsibilities
Important information security policies and privacy information may be found at the Penn computing policy site. Information on the University’s acceptable use policy may be found on the AUP site. Please familiarize yourself with these policies and abide by their guidelines. Additional security tips may be found at the Tips for Safer Computing site.
Protecting Student Privacy at Penn
Management of personal online data is important. The University’s Privacy Officer has prepared guidance for you to minimize risks. A brochure entitled “Penn Privacy Student Guide” helps you think about the value of your personal information and how to keep it protected. Additional information can be found on the Penn Privacy site.
Students in the School of Medicine have enhanced security email accounts. Students may use their PennKey credentials to access their email through the webmail site, Apple mail/thunderbird email client, and some mobile devices.
The instructions below show how students may setup their Zimbra account in the Thunderbird or Apple Mail email clients.
Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express do not support Kerberos. These email clients will not work with your email account.
PMACS offers support for mobile email access on iOS and some Android devices. More information may be found on our mobile email access website.

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP )is the anti-virus solution recommended by the University. SEP is site licensed at Penn and available free of charge to members of the Penn community. Please follow the links below to obtain a copy for your computer.
Students may access AirPennNet, the University's wireless network, in all School of Medicine facilities. PennKey credentials are required to access AirPennNet.
AirPennNet-Help is a wireless network that assists students to configure and connect their devices to AirPennNet. To connect please select AirPennNet-Help from the list of available wireless networks on your device and launch a web browser to access the XpressConnect Wizard. The wizard will walk through the setup of AirPennNet on your device.

The Student Portal is your gateway to online resources and information. It also displays announcements and events of interest to MD students.
Virtual Curriculum contains course notes, presentations; audio and video of lectures.
The MD student directory contains photos and contact data for other MD students, along with your own personal information, such as mailbox and locker combinations, and your usernames for hospital clinical systems.
OASIS contains your schedule for classes, lectures and small groups; OASIS is also where you will enter your preferences for clinical clerkships and electives, and see the results of scheduling lotteries.
Evaluations is where you rate your courses, lectures, other events, and instructors/clinical faculty.
The School of Medicine Information Computing Support Services Group maintains computers for student use in the lounge on the 2nd floor of Stemmler Hall, and in eight classrooms on the 1st floor of Stemmler Hall. The computers are Dell workstations with a standardized set of software including Microsoft Office and web browsers. The lounge is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with black key access security. Classroom computers are available to use 24/7 when classes are not in session.
There are a limited number of ports available in the 2nd floor lounge for personal laptop network access. Two printers are also available in the 2nd floor lounge with the same pay for print system that operates in the Biomedical Library. PennCard cash levels can be augmented in the machines in the Johnson Pavilion Lobby or in the Biomedical Library.
