Medical Student Orientation, August 2009

The School of Medicine Information Services (SOM IS) team welcomes you to Penn.

The Student’s home page (http://www.med.upenn.edu/student/) is a good beginning, and a very valuable resource. You can browse this site to find out what is available and how to get to the services you will need. This page is maintained by Academic Programs.

In general, much of your first 18 month curriculum is available online, ranging from the notable Curriculum 2000©, to images and links to other important services across the university. Academic Programs resources maintain the curriculum and access to academic computing.

Computing Security and Your Responsibilities

Important information security policies and privacy information may be found at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/policy/ .  Information on the University’s acceptable use policy may be found at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/policy/aup.html .  Please familiarize yourself with these policies and abide by their guidelines.  Additional security tips may be found at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/security/checklists/tips.html .

Protecting Student Privacy at Penn

Management of personal online data is important.  The University’s Privacy Officer has prepared guidance for you to minimize risks. A brochure entitled “Penn Privacy Student Guide” helps you think about the value of your personal information and how to keep it protected. Additional information can be found at http://www.upenn.edu/privacy.

Email

Students in the School of Medicine have enhanced security email accounts. Enhanced security email accounts are accessed using PennKey credentials via webmail (http://zimbra.upenn.edu) or a Kerberos-enabled client.

Currently Penn supports two Kerberos-enabled email clients in addition to Webmail: Thunderbird and Apple Mail.

Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Entourage do not support Kerberos. These email clients will not work with your enhanced security email account.

Mobile devices such as BlackBerries, Treos, and iPhones do not support Kerberos and therefore you will not be able to setup your email account on these devices.  However, you may navigate to the webmail page (http://zimbra.upenn.edu), which includes a mobile version that is optimized for viewing on your mobile device.

Below are links to instructions on how to install and configure your email account in our supported email clients. Keep in mind that you can use webmail (http://zimbra.upenn.edu) from almost any computer with a recent web browser and an internet connection.

Anti-virus management at Penn

Symantec AntiVirus for Windows and Norton AntiVirus for the Mac are recommended for use at the University. Both programs check hard drives, floppy disks, removable media, and email attachments for known computer viruses and remove any that they find, including macro viruses. These programs also monitor your computer and notify you of any infection attempts. These products are site licensed at Penn and available free of charge to members of the Penn community.

Wireless network access

The School of Medicine provides wireless network access to students in the second floor student lounge area of Stemmler Hall.  It is possible to find other AirPennNet access elsewhere on campus in many student common areas, including the BioMedical Library in the Johnson Pavilion. Your PennKey is required for wireless access.

For information on how to connect to AirPennNet and where it is available, please see: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless/

Student Web Applications

The Student Portal is your gateway to online resources and information. It also displays announcements and events of interest to MD students.

Virtual Curriculum contains course notes, presentations; audio and video of lectures.

The MD student directory contains photos and contact data for other MD students, along with your own personal information, such as mailbox and locker combinations, and your usernames for hospital clinical systems.

OASIS contains your schedule for classes, lectures and small groups; OASIS is also where you will enter your preferences for clinical clerkships and electives, and see the results of scheduling lotteries.

Evaluations is where you rate your courses, lectures, other events, and instructors/clinical faculty.

Getting Computer Help:

The School of Medicine Information Computing Support Services Group maintains computers for student use in two lab rooms on the 2nd floor of Stemmler Hall, and in eight classrooms on the 1st floor of Stemmler Hall. The computers are Dell workstations with a standardized set of software including Microsoft Office and web browsers. The lab rooms are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with black key access security. Classroom computers are available to use 24/7 when classes are not in session.

There are a limited number of ports available in the 2nd floor lab rooms for personal laptop network access. Two printers are also available in the 2nd floor lab rooms with the same pay for print system that operates in the Biomedical Library. PennCard cash levels can be augmented in the machines in the Johnson Pavilion Lobby or in the Biomedical Library.
