The Penn School of Medicine Information Services department provides a number of Web development and design services for faculty, staff, and students within the School. The following services are provided for official SOM departments, institutes, and groups:
Any department, center, institute, graduate group, lab, or student organization may request an account on our Web server, http://www.med.upenn.edu. Included with each account is a 30 MB disk quota and a variety of services and security options.
Please be aware that the School of Medicine has design standards for its Web sites which must be followed. If you have any questions about these requirements, please contact Alethea Peña, Web Project Manager for the School of Medicine.
Any account holder on http://www.med.upenn.edu may request assistance in creating his/her organization's Web site. This may include any/all of the following:
These services are currently provided free of charge, but must be scheduled as far in advance as possible. Please note also that some groups will receive higher priority and access to the full suite of services while other groups will receive limited services. These decisions are based on the priorities of the SOM IT Advisory Group and the relevance of the site to the overall mission of the School of Medicine.
If your organization falls within the School of Medicine, please contact Alethea Peña, Web Project Manager for the School of Medicine.
Organizations within the University of Pennsylvania Health System which do not have an academic or research component, should contact the UPHS Web Group for assistance.
The School has a team of web designers and programmers that develop web-based database applications. Development is limited to applications with school-wide relevance or benefit. Requests for application development should have the sponsorship of one of the members of the IT Advisory Group. To discuss the feasibility of a project, or for assistance in initiating a project discussion, contact Janet Lind, Director of Information Services, for a consultation.
The School provides a Web development platform for those groups interested in doing their own application development. The platform consists of an Apache web server running on Linux, PHP programming language, and a mySQL database. This server is managed by Information Services, housed in a secure machine room, and backed up on a regular nightly schedule. Programming support, beyond the creation of accounts, is not available. This server cannot support applications dealing with patient-identifiable data.
Organizations within the University of Pennsylvania Health System which do not have an academic or research component or which require interaction with patient data, should contact the UPHS Web Group for assistance.
Personal or commercial web sites must be stored on an external host. The School does not provide support or hosting services for personal websites.
