Memo from Eugene C. Janda, Chief, Department of Fire and Emergency Services / Division of Public Safety:
As we enter the holiday season, I would like to remind the Penn community of some basic requirements concerning the use of holiday decorations. Cut or live trees and flammable decorations are not permitted in campus buildings as per University Policy and the Philadelphia Fire Code.
The obvious fire safety hazard and potential danger associated with cut or live trees and boughs, is sufficient reason to strictly enforce this policy.
All decorations must be flame retardant; check tags or wrappers prior to purchase.
Decorations must not be placed in front of exits.
To avoid a fire hazard and the possibility of severe electrical shock, electric light strings should not be directly attached to metallic trees and/or decorations.
All lights must be tagged as having been Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed. Check for frayed wires, loose connections and broken or cracked sockets; damaged sets should be discarded. All electrical decorations must be unplugged at the end of the working day, no exceptions.
The use of open flame, such as decorative candles, is strictly prohibited.
The objective of these regulations is to avoid a tragic situation that would turn this joyful time of the year into a period of sadness and regret.
Fire and Emergency Services wishes the Penn community a safe and happy holiday season and healthy and prosperous 2013.
