Advisory:
Starting on 12/18 digging of a trench to install a drain line from the back entrance to John Morgan to an area marked out in the courtyard. During this minimum 5 day period, weather permitting, there will be construction equipment in this area and the hours of work will be from 7:00am to 4:00pm daily. For Anatomy Chemistry there will be a 4 hour water and sewage shutdown on 12/19 beginning at 5 pm. Additional information will follow in another plant ops notice. Once the drain line is tied in and operational the hole will be back filled the concrete area replaced and asphalt area covered with stone until spring, when it can be paved. Thank you in advance for your patients during this inconvenience.

There is a high flow alarm on the CO2 system for the 12th floor which could indicate a possible leak. Security and Physical Plant are touring the floor to investigate and repair, if needed. All labs are to check their equipment connections to the CO2 system for leaks and check that any valves not attached to anything are closed. Report any findings to Security and your BA.

Important Changes to Penn’s Hazardous Waste Disposal Program: ALL SCHOOL OF MEDICINE BUILDINGS

Distribution of new yellow EHRS Hazardous Waste Labels and Satellite Accumulation Area Signs will begin December 5th throughout the Perelman School of Medicine. The changes for labeling and signage were necessary to comply with the new U.S. EPA Hazardous Waste Generator Improvement Rule that recently went into effect. Once you obtain the new yellow chemical waste labels, discard the old green labels. The new labels and signs will be available at the following locations:

Anatomy Chemistry BRB II/III, BRB II/III lobby: by the security desk at the entrance

SCL 1st floor: table near the security office.

CRB/Stemmler: by the CRB security desk at the entrance.

Johnson/John Morgan & Anatomy Chemistry: table near the security desk in the breezeway

EHRS Directive:
Laboratory staff must now determine if a specific waste is Hazardous or Non-Hazardous. EPA regulations must be followed to make the waste-type determination. The reverse side of the label provides guidance on making this determination. EHRS hazardous waste technical staff will answer any questions. In general, waste generated from laboratory activities is considered hazardous by the EPA. Therefore as you fill-out the label, it is better to overclassify the material as hazardous. EHRS technical staff review each label prior to removal from the laboratory.

When load is shifted to and from the generator, you will experience blinks in power, at both occurrences. Please be advised that the John Morgan building is scheduled for a re-commissioning survey of its HVAC system on November 28, 29 and 30, 2017 and on December 4 and 7, 2017 between 6:00 am and 5:00 pm. During this time for short periods the air flow will vary and some fume hoods in the affected areas and floors may go into alarm.

EHRS Directive:
No lab work may be conducted in the affected areas during this brief time period the fume hoods are in alarm. Please cap and close all containers; and lower the fume hood sash when leaving on the prior work day.

Please be advised that on early in the morning, between 3:00 am and 7:00 am, FRES will be conducting the annual emergency generator load test as required by the City of Philadelphia, Department of Licenses and Inspection. There will be two short electrical blinks during this time frame between 3:00 am and 7:00 am to test both generators. As a precaution, we recommend shutting off all computers, data gathering and power sensitive equipment unless protected by a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). Also during this period the fire pump will be tested and flow water outside the building during the generator test.

EHRS Directive:
All work with hazardous chemicals, infectious agents and radioactive materials is PROHIBITED throughout the building during the testing period. No operations are permitted inside fume hoods or bio-safety cabinets in the affected rooms.
