The Beck Initiative
Dr. Beck has recently launched training programs for therapists in community mental health agencies in Philadelphia as well as therapists in the Veterans Healthcare System. Through the Beck Initiative, a partnership between the Center for the Prevention of Suicide (CPS) and the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation (DBH/MR), the CPS has begun training therapists in city agencies to conduct cognitive therapy for prevention and treatment of a variety of problems and disorders including suicide, depression, schizophrenia, substance misuse, depression and anxiety in youth. This program will ultimately be developed into a standing DBH/MR program and will provide excellent opportunities to examine barriers and factors related to successful implementation. Ongoing research measures the impact of the organizational context of city mental health agencies on the sustained adoption of cognitive therapy.
