Meet the Mentors: Dr. Sydney EvansSUPERS@PENN
Dr. Sydney Evans attended Rutgers University for her undergraduate degree and then the University of Pennsylvania for her Veterinary (VMD) and Masters Degrees. She also completed an internship and residency in Radiation Oncology and Radiology at Penn. After over 20 years at Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Evans was recruited by the Department of Radiation Oncology at Penn’s School of Medicine as a scientific researcher. Her work has largely been at the crossroads between radiology and radiation oncology, studying methods to examine biological processes such as hypoxia (low tissue oxygen) and blood flow in tumors. Working with Dr. Cameron Koch, Dr.Evans was responsible for bringing the hypoxia diagnostic drug EF5 into human clinical trials.
Dr. Evans is very interested in mentoring students. She conceived the SUPERS program and along with Dr. Koumenis obtained the grant funding for this initiative.
Outside of work, Dr. Evans has 2 daughters, one a rising Junior at American University’s Kogod School of Business and the second, a Carnegie Mellon School of Design graduate currently living in New York City and working as a graphic designer/illustrator. Her hobbies are gardening, playing piano, reading and, when not injured, playing tennis.
