Eddie Lee, M.D., Ph.D. (Principle Investigator)

“I received my medical degree and doctoral degree in Neuroscience from Penn, followed by clinical training in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology from HUP.  I am currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a practicing neuropathologist in the illustrious Division of Neuropathology.

My research involves using of advanced molecular, biochemical and histologic techniques to analyze brain tissue in order to (1) understanding the interaction between peripheral obesity and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and (2) the role of RNA-binding proteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal lobar dementia. I am also a co-investigator in the neuropathology cores of the Penn Alzheimer's Disease Core Center (ADCC) and the Penn Udall Center for Parkinson's Disease Research.

My goals include establishing a world-class experimental neuropathology laboratory and supporting lab members in our collective mission to increase our understanding of the causes and cures of aging-related neurodegenerative diseases.”

Ines Chopra (Postdoctoral Fellow)

"I got my doctoral degree in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. My these work involved understanding the molecular mechanisms of a novle hypoglycemia-induced defense pathway in cardiac and skeletal muscles. I recently joined the Translational Neuropathology Research Lab as a postdoctoral researcher and will work towards deciphering the links between leptin signaling and Alzheimer's disease."

Payal Jain (Rotation Graduate Student)

"I have a Master's degree in Biotechnology from Columbia University and my research at Columbia University Medical Center involved studying dendrite-substrate interactions in regulating developmental neuropruning in the fly nervous system. My current rotation project is to understand the role of leptin signaling in APP processing which could regulate Alzheimer's disease and also it's effect on synaptogenesis in primary neuronal cultures. Broadly, I am interested in investigating an area of neuronal pathology over the course of my graduate studies and also work on developing novel therapies. "

Elaine Liu ( Graduate Student)

"I obtained my bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Albany, NY. I would like to broaden my interest and knowledge in neurodegenerative research during my graduate degree at Penn. My goals are to use different techniques to analyze abnormal RNA metabolism in human tissue."
