Eddie Lee, M.D., Ph.D. (Principle Investigator)

“I received my medical degree and doctoral degree in Neuroscience from Penn, followed by clinical training in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology from HUP.  I am currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a practicing neuropathologist in the illustrious Division of Neuropathology.

My research involves using of advanced molecular, biochemical and histologic techniques to analyze brain tissue in order to (1) understanding the interaction between peripheral obesity and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and (2) the role of RNA-binding proteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal lobar dementia. I am also a co-investigator in the neuropathology cores of the Penn Alzheimer's Disease Core Center (ADCC) and the Penn Udall Center for Parkinson's Disease Research.

My goals include establishing a world-class experimental neuropathology laboratory and supporting lab members in our collective mission to increase our understanding of the causes and cures of aging-related neurodegenerative diseases.”

Ines Chopra (Postdoctoral Fellow)

"I got my doctoral degree in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. My these work involved understanding the molecular mechanisms of a novle hypoglycemia-induced defense pathway in cardiac and skeletal muscles. I recently joined the Translational Neuropathology Research Lab as a postdoctoral researcher and will work towards deciphering the links between leptin signaling and Alzheimer's disease."

Shannon C. Jenkins (Research Specialist)

"I obtained my Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Thomas Jefferson University. The focus of my thesis was trying to understand the molecular mechanism of disease onset for a neurodegenerative disease called Spinal and Bulbar muscular atrophy (also known as Kennedy’s Disease). I've recently joined the Translational Neuropathology Research Lab to continue studying neurodegenerative diseases and the proteins that play a role in disease onset and progression."

Elaine Liu (Rotation Graduate Student)

"I obtained my bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Albany, NY. I would like to broaden my interest and knowledge in neurodegenerative research during my graduate degree at Penn. My goal from this rotation is to use different techniques to analyze secondary structures of RNA from human tissue."

Sarah Ly (Rotation Graduate Student)

"I obtained my bachelor's degree in Biology at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. Previously, I worked at Barrow Neurological Institute, examining the role of dysfunction in energy metabolism in Alzheimer's disease. At Penn, I hope to conduct research that will allow me to gain new insights on important aspects of neurodegeneration. During my rotation, I will be studying the relationship between leptin and Alzheimer's diseease-related dysfunction."
