On-going Research Projects Looking for Volunteers
If you are NOT TRYING TO QUIT smoking right now - the following reseach studies are recruiting.
The University of Pennsylvania's Tobacco Use Research Center is recruiting cigarette smokers for a new study examining the relationship between attention and smoking behavior. This is not a quit smoking program.
Eligible participants will be asked to complete a total of three 3.5 hour in-person visits over three weeks, scheduled between 8 AM and 2 PM on weekdays. During the first session, you will receive a brief medical and psychological screening to evaluate your final eligibility for the study and you will be asked to complete a series of computer tasks.
The second and third sessions will include a 1 hour functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan. For more information on functional MRI, please watch the video at this link (Windows version requires Internet Explorer) http://cfn.upenn.edu/virtscan.htm
Participants will be compensated for their time and may also receive an image of their brain. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please call (215) 746-7150.
The University of Pennsylvania's Tobacco Use Research Center is recruiting cigarette smokers over the age of 21 for a research study involving the use of a new low nicotine cigarette product. This is not a quit smoking program.
Eligible participants will be asked to make a morning in-person visit every 5 days for 5 weeks where their smoking behavior will be measured. The 1st visit lasts 2.5 hours and the remaining 7 visits lasts 1.5 hours. At each session, participants will answer questionnaires about smoking behavior, provide breath samples to measure cigarette smoke exposure, and smoke a few cigarettes at the Tobacco Use Research Center.
Eligible participants will smoke their own cigarettes at the beginning of the study, and then be randomized, similar to a coin toss, to one of several cigarette types, including possibly their own cigarette brand, during the remainder of the study. Once participants are randomized, all the cigarettes they are to smoke for the month will be provided for them. Participants may be asked to switch cigarette brands for 1 month. Participants will also be asked to bring in urine samples on specific days to determine levels of exposure to cigarette smoke compounds, and to collect and bring in their used cigarette butts and un-smoked cigarettes.
Participants will be compensated for their time at the end of each in-person visit. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please call 1-877-513-7848.
