Public Transit Information

Train

Penn Medicine Station, on SEPTA's Airport Regional Rail line, is the nearest train stop, located across from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. From all other public transit lines, however, it is more convenient and cost effective to reach Penn's campus via 30th St. Station.

William H. Gray III 30th St. Station (www.30thstreetstation.com) is a major departure point for commuter trains, trolleys and buses serving the University City community. 30th St. Station is most easily accessed through SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line running east and west on Market Street. The Market-Frankford can be reached by commuters from north or south of the city through a free interchange with the Broad Street Subway at 15th and Market streets. From 30th Street Station, take any westbound trolley (except #10) to 37th Street (and Spruce) as described below.

Trolleys

Five subway/surface trolley lines (10, 11, 13, 34, 36) serve the West Philadelphia area. All lines except the number 10 trolley stop underground on campus at 37th and Spruce St. From the trolley exit, walk a half-block west to the corner of 38th and Spruce. Turn left and follow 38th Street south, as it becomes University Avenue. Passing the Veterans Administration Hospital on your right, continue on University Avenue to Curie Boulevard. Turn left on Curie Boulevard and continue to the Stellar-Chance Laboratories entrance, on your left. Blockley Hall (see campus map) is adjacent and accessible through Stellar-Chance.

Buses

Three major bus lines serve the campus area, taking riders from Center City and West Philadelphia. The #21 bus heads west on Walnut Street and east on Chestnut Street. Get off at 34th and Walnut Streets. Walk south on 34th passing the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on your right. The street curves right to the west. One block later, turn right onto Osler Circle and follow directions to our offices (see below). The #42 bus goes west on Walnut Street until it switches to Spruce Street at 38th street via Civic Center Boulevard. Get off at Osler Circle, the first stop after Children’s Hospital. Follow directions to our offices (see below).

The #40 bus, which originates north of campus, runs down 40th street to Spruce Street, then onto South Street, east into Center City. Get off at 38th and Spruce streets. Cross 38th street to the Wawa food market. Turn right and follow 38th around as it becomes University Avenue.

Return trips

Eastbound, the #42 bus runs on Spruce Street until it switches to Chestnut Street at 33rd street. Both the 21 and the 42 buses terminate in Society Hill. Westbound, the 40 bus returns on Lombard Street to the South street bridge. Additionally, the 21, 40, and 42 provide wheelchair lift service. Finally, route 30 runs from 30th street station via 34th street and Civic Center Boulevard to 42nd street, then travels north above Market Street to service West Philadelphia.
