Thank you for your interest in enrolling as a visiting student at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. In order to be considered for an elective here, you must be from an LCME or AOA accredited institution and:
- Have completed visiting student application
- Have completed the majority of all required core clerkships; minimum requirements are medicine, surgery, and the core clerkship in the area of interest
- abide by our rotation dates
- provide an immunization record, completed in full by a health care provider
- provide certificate of $1,000,000/$3,000,000 malpractice insurance coverage
- complete the UPHS HIPAA training and provide the Assessment form
- provide documentation of personal health insurance
- have your school provide us with documentation verifying that a satisfactory criminal background check was performed with no negative findings
- copy of CV (optional)
If you are interested in an Ortho Elective please read the following:
Department of Orthopaedics - Dr. Richard D. Lackman, Department Chair- We are happy to extend rotations to students from other medical schools as time permits and the appropriate School of Medicine procedures are in order.
- We enjoy the camaraderie and mutual exchange that these rotations permit.
- The rotation process ultimately provides us with a better insight into the applicant, which we feel is beneficial to both sides. However, we are unable to guarantee an interview during our annual resident selection process based on this criterion alone.
If you are interested in Otorhinolarygology at HUP (OT300A) please read the following:
Department of Otorhinolarygology - Dr. Douglas Bigelow, Course Director- A CV is required
- Copies of Boards Scores required
- Copy of your medical school transcript is required
Department of Urology - Dr. Allen Wein, Department Chair

Acceptance Fee
Upon course availability an acceptance email will be sent to you and the course director. To confirm your enrollment you are required to send a NON-REFUNDABLE registration fee of $150 per elective 10 days after you receive our email. Please do not send a check with your initial application materials. Please be aware that, even if circumstances result in your not taking the course, this is a registration fee and it will not be refunded. Checks should be made payable to “The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.”
Enrollment Limitations
Visiting students are limited to 8 weeks of electives.
Housing, Meals and Parking
You are responsible for locating and paying for your own transportation, housing, meals and parking. Please note that it can be both expensive and difficult to locate parking on campus. You many want to contact the Campus Park and Ride Company [PDF] [website]. Please keep in mind that Campus Park and Ride is not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. We are providing this information out of courtesy.
Also, final housing arrangements should be deferred until enrollment has been confirmed in case we are unable to accommodate your course request.

Performance Evaluation
Upon completion of your elective, UPenn’s performance evaluation will automatically be forwarded to your school. Our faculty is not required to complete non-UPenn evaluation forms.
