Renyu Liu, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, was featured in Penn Medicine News on February 23, 2017, for the lifesaving early stroke recognition program, Stroke 1-2-0, that he devleoped and initiated in China along with colleague, Jing Zhao, MD, PhD.  Take a look at the educational video, Stroke 1-2-0, that they recently directed and produced. Penn Medicine News Release

Nabil Elkassabany, MD, Assistant Professor, was highlighted March 31, 2017 on for Penn’s "multi-modal" post-operative pain control that de-emphasizes opioid use.  


Leadership Positions 

William Vernick, MD, Associate Professor, became the Associate Chief of Anesthesiology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in January, 2017.  Bill completed his residency and fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at Penn and has been the Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology at PPMC for the past eleven years and Co-Medical Director of Penn Lung Rescue Program since 2014. In his new role, Bill will work closely with Mark Pizzini, MD, Chief of Anesthesiology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. 

Nabil Elkassabany, MD, Assistant Professor, has been appointed the new Anesthesia Director of the Penn Medicine University City Ambulatory Surgery Center.  Nabil will assume this responsibility in addition to continuing his role as Chief of Orthopedic Anesthesia for the Department. 

Peter Yi, MD, Assistant Professor, has accepted the position as the Anesthesia Director at the Tuttleman Ambulatory Surgicenter.

Ronak Shah, MD, Assistant Professor, has been appointed, Director of EP Anesthesia, for HUP.

Atkins, Polomano, and LiuThe Department was well represented at the recent Penn China Research Symposium by Rosemary Polomano, PhD, RN, Professor, Josh Atkins, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, and Renyu Liu, MD, PhD, Associate Professor. The symposium was held at PENN on January 27, 2017.

Patricia Kapur, MD, Clinical Professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care  at the Perelman School of Medicine, presented the Eleventh Annual Stephen J. Prevoznik Lecture on Leadership at our Grand Rounds on February 2, 2017. The title of her talk was, Leading into the Future. Pat is an outstanding leader in our specialty, including the former Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology of the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA, Executive Vice President of UCLA Health, and CEO of the Faculty Practice Group (FPG), as well as, President of the American Board of Anesthesiology, President of the Foundation of Anesthesia Education and Research, and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the International Anesthesia Research Society.
