Description of CCEB Expertise
Dr. Stineman and her colleagues’ research focuses on the causes of, progression through, and recovery from disabling chronic conditions and injuries. Driven by a biopsycho-ecological framework, the work recognizes the combined effects of both intrinsic biologic and mental causes and extrinsic physical and social environmental causes of illness and disability. The team established Recovery Preference Exploration (RPE) as a way to clarify the personal meanings of and cultural stereotypes associated with disability. Adapting principles from oncology the group is establishing a series of staging systems for disability appropriate to a wide variety of populations and health conditions. Her earlier work formed an impairment and function-based classification system which was adapted by the department of Veterans Affairs for quality improvement initiatives and by Medicare as part of its national prospective payment system for inpatient rehabilitation. Currently funded through several R01s, the team is undertaking a number of comparative effective studies involving the rehabilitation of stroke and amputation, and are continuing to develop a variety of staging systems to better understand the triggers of functional deterioration and recovery at the person and population levels.Description of Content-based Expertise
