Description of Research Expertise

Research Interests: virus-host interactions, host co-factors of viral infection, protein-protein interactions, Flaviviridae viruses

Description of Research: My long-term research interests center on understanding the molecular mechanisms of viral-host interactions and the application of this information to develop new antiviral strategies. We have used mass spectrometry technologies to identify cellular factors that interact with Hepatitis C virus through a collaboration with Dr. Nevan Krogan. We comprehensively characterized HCV-host protein-protein interactions, and tested the functional requirements of these interactions using an RNAi screen. This led to the identification of 69 new host factors that physically interact with HCV and influence infection. This wealth of data serves as a platform for as I continue my work at the University of Pennsylvania. We are particularly interested in host factors that are involved in infection with related viruses and have generated a West Nile virus-host protein-protein interaction dataset to make these comparisons.
