Description of Clinical Expertise

Dr. Doubeni is board-certified in both family physician and general preventive medicine. He is a clinical epidemiologist/health services researcher. His goal is to provide exceptional care irrespective of a patient's background. He is particularly interested in disease prevention by identifying and mitigating individual risk of chronic illnesses including cancer.

"My clinical work and research are inextricably interconnected. My clinical experiences inform my research, which in turn informs my clinical and teaching activities."

Description of Other Expertise

Dr. Doubeni currently serves as the Chair for the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). He is a Senior Scholar in the Penn Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and a Senior Fellow in both the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics and the Center for Public Health Initiatives. Dr. Doubeni serves as diversity search advisor for the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. He had also served as interim Associate Vice Provost for Diversity (AVPD) for the UMASS Medical School, supporting the recruitment, retention and career advancement of faculty that are underrepresented in academic medicine by building external collaborative relationships.

Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Doubeni's research is on colorectal cancer focusing on racial and socioeconomic disparities in mortality and on the effectiveness of screening. He currently leads National Institute of Health-funded multisite studies of the comparative effectiveness colorectal cancer screening and is a co-principal investigator of one of three colorectal cancer research centers of the PROSPR (Population-Based Research Optimizing Screening through Personalized Regimens) network. The PROSPR center, based in Kaiser Permanente in Northern and Southern California, is examining critical questions about factors that limit the optimal performance or effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening (with colonoscopy or fecal immunochemical test) in order to remediate avoidable failures in the process of screening. Dr. Doubeni received a 2010 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his work on cancer screening comparative effectiveness research, mentoring and community service.
