Description of Itmat Expertise

My research has focused on the role of bioenergetics, ion transport and metabolic coupling factors in nutrient- and hormone (GLP-1, acetylcholine)-stimulated insulin release in healthy and diabetic islets. For the last 17 years, the availability of human islets from the Islet Resources Center at the University of Pennsylvania provided me with the opportunity to characterize the metabolic, ionic and secretion profiles of normal and T2DM islets.
In addition to my primary interests, as a Technical Director of Islet Cell Biology Core at Diabetes Research Center, I am also involved in various projects of Center Investigators that study normal and abnormal pancreatic beta-cell function.

Description of Research Expertise

My research has focused on the role of bioenergetics, ion transport and metabolic coupling factors in nutrient- and drug-stimulated insulin release at normal conditions and during diabetes mellitus.
Using combinations of different methods and approaches, including 31P, 13C, and 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy techniques, polarographic and phosphorescence methods of measuring O2 consumption, Ca2+ imaging and others, I attempt to directly address the essential mechanisms of stimulus-secretion coupling in pancreatic islets.
