Description of Research Expertise

Clinical research focusing on:
1) Pediatric neuropsychiatric lupus
2) Psychosocial health & outcomes of youth with lupus and other rheumatologic disease
3) Healthcare utilization and disparities in pediatric lupus

Description of Itmat Expertise

My research focuses on improving mental health and psychiatric outcomes in pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Through administrative data analysis and prospective studies in pediatric SLE, my work has investigated hospitalization outcomes; depression and anxiety prevalence and risk factors; barriers/facilitators to mental health intervention; disparities in mental healthcare; and determinants of psychological adaptation to illness. Having established a high burden of psychiatric morbidity in pediatric SLE and the unmet need for mental health intervention, my research is broadening in scope to use clinical and translational methodology. Ongoing research will: 1) examine mechanisms of pediatric-onset neuropsychiatric SLE utilizing neurocognitive and multi-modal
neuroimaging measures; and 2) develop and test strategies for mental health intervention in pediatric rheumatology
