Monday, July 9th marks the start of the 6th year of the School of Medicine's participation in the Summer Mentorship Program. This is a non-residential opportunity for 10th and 11th grade students currently enrolled in Philadelphia Public and Charter High Schools. The 10-12 selected participants will spend four weeks with us, gaining knowledge about the field of medicine and exposure to the benefits of post-secondary education.
In a departure from past years, we are changing the direction of the program so that students can gain broader perspective and exposure to the different medical specialties at Penn Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
For this effort to be successful, we are asking members of the faculty to volunteer time to permit one of our students to shadow you in your practice/research setting for a minimum of 3-4 hours one or twice a week from Monday, July 9th to Tuesday, July 29th.
Each of the SMP participants will receive HIPPA training before they embark on any shadowing experience so that they are knowledgeable about the patient confidentiality policies and procedures.
We recognize that you are extremely busy but hope that you will support this important endeavor and are collecting the names of faculty volunteers and their availability.
Afterwards, our program coordinators, Mr. Aaron Davis or Mr. Anthony Harris will assume responsibility for coordinating the schedule and contacting you with detailed information about the specific students/dates and times.
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. If you have any specific questions or concerns please contact either of us at 215-746-6658.
