Expert Course Instructors:

Course Director, Rosemary Frasso, PhD, MSc, CPH

Dr. Frasso is the Course Director for the Winter Institute on Qualitative Research Methods, a training program sponsored by the Center for Public Health Initiative at University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson's College of Population Health. She is an Associate Professor and the Director Public Health at the Thomas Jefferson College of Population Health. Her research interests include qualitative methods, improving access to physical and mental health services for vulnerable populations, maternal child health, health disparities, health equity and health literacy.

Aneeza Agha, MA

Aneeza Agha, MA is a Project Manager at the Veteran’s Health Administration currently researching patient engagement, hospice care, and suicide prevention. She also has mixed methods research experience in the fields of health care access, health disparities, minority populations, risk behaviors, and HIV/AIDS prevention & care. 


Dorene Balmer, PhD

Dr. Balmer is the Director of Research on Pediatric Education at The Children’s Hospital Philadelphia, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Perelman School of Medicine University of Pennsylvania, and Associate Fellow in the Center for Public Health Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Balmer integrates theory from the social sciences into qualitative research on implicit learning, professional identity construction, and complex learning contexts.

Fran Barg PhD, MEd

Dr. Barg is a Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine and a Professor of Medical Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology. Her research focuses on the use of mixed methods research as it applies to patient-centered outcomes research and environmental health.

Melissa Dichter, PhD, MSW

Melissa Dichter, PhD, MSW, is Associate Director and Core Investigator at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Her research focuses on women’s experiences with intimate partner violence (IPV) and intersections with the healthcare, social service, and criminal legal systems as well as other social contributions to health.

Joel Fein, MD, MPH

Dr. Fein is an attending physician in the Emergency Department at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Perelman school of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on violence prevention, adolescent mental health and childhood trauma.

Shimrit Keddem, PhD, MPH, MUSA

Shimrit Keddem is the Director of Operations at the Center for Evaluation of PACT (CEPACT) in Philadelphia which focuses on improving patient-centered care and reducing racial disparities in patient-centered care at the Veteran Health Administration (VHA).

Marnie LaNoue

Dr. LaNoue is an associate professor of Population Health at Thomas Jefferson University and Director of the PhD in Population Health Sciences. A research methodologist and psychometrician by training, she has been funded to use and study Group Concept Mapping (GCM) for patient-centered outcomes research and measure development studies and has published several peer-reviewed papers on the topic.

Amy Leader, DrPH, MPH

Dr. Amy Leader is an Associate Professor in the Division of Population Science, Department of Medical Oncology, Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where her research frequently incorporates qualitative methods.  She also teaches behavioral science courses in the MPH program at the Jefferson College of Population Health.

Judy Shea, PhD

Judy A. Shea, Ph.D. is Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania; Associate Dean of Medical Education Research and co-Director of the Masters in Health Policy Research.  She serves dual roles, working with faculty and fellows to design and evaluate research projects, and directing the evaluation of the medical school curriculum and faculty.  Much of her work focuses on evaluating the psychometric properties of curriculum evaluation tools and developing measures to assess components of health such as health literacy, patient satisfaction and health-related quality of life.

A one day-long training session using NVivo software will be offered. Training sessions are co-taught by Shimrit Keddem, PhD, MPH, MUSA, and Aneeza Agha, MA.
