Workshop Description:

Almost 1 year into the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers and clinicians have already identified significant increases in rates of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms in children and adolescents. With uncertainty about the danger and contagiousness of the virus among children, transitions from in-person to virtual schooling and back again, reduced opportunities for normative peer support, and “quarantine fatigue,” a perfect storm for anxiety symptoms has brewed. This webinar will address how to augment standard CBT for various forms of anxiety prevalent in the pandemic - health, separation, social, and school-related anxiety. Attention will be paid to the role of social media, screen time, and virtual platforms in pediatric mental health. Using case examples encompassing a variety of patient presentations, we will offer strategies to modify existing evidence-based exposure protocols to treat anxiety in the pandemic. Attendees will also have an opportunity to hear about the latest research in this topic area. There will also be ample opportunity to ask questions and discuss common therapy challenges unique to the pandemic.

CE Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe changes in the rates and presentation of anxiety disorders among children and adolescents since the start of the COVID-19 epidemic.

  2. Plan and prepare ways to modify existing CBT protocols to address schooling changes, screen time and social media use, difficulties sustaining peer support, and COVID anxiety.

  3. Describe ways to maximize telehealth efficacy with child/adolescent populations.
